History
Powerful rulers.
The "Garden Castle of Herberstein" is located in the municipality of Stubenberg near the Herberstein WIldlife Park. The fortified castle stands high on an east-west-facing rock. Not visible from distance, it is very difficult to access. The oldest parts of the castle date to the end of the 13
th century. In the middle of the 16
th century, it was expanded and transformed into a residential building with Renaissance elements. For 21 generations, the castle has been owned by the Herberstein family. In the 17
th and 18
th centuries, about one fifth of Styria was owned by the Counts of Herberstein. Their possession of more than a dozen castles and palaces from Istria to Bohemia, from Carinthia to Silesia made the Herbersteins a leading power in Europe.
Blooming Fairy Tales in the Garden Castle

Sprouting, twining, blooming, sweet-smelling, thriving--the castle's impressive gardens date back to the 16th century and are inseparably linked to this place. They invite one to stroll and be astonished.
